WHAT TO EXPECT
Counselling, or therapy as some people call it, allows you to talk about your problems in a safe and private space. It let's you speak freely without being judged. People go to counselling when they want to explore their thoughts and feelings or make changes in their lives. As your counsellor, I won't tell you what to do, but I'll help you understand what you're feeling and guide you to finding your own answers.

Before the first session - I like to have a quick phone call so you can get to know me a little and what I do, ask any questions you might have and decide if i'm the right counsellor for you. This is a free, casual chat with the hope of arranging a first session together.

The first session - I'll start with a little introduction about myself and how I work. I'll then talk you through a contract which details things like what the expectations are from us both while we work together, my ethical duties to you as my client, as well as payment and cancellations policies. Once we've gone through the paperwork and you're happy to continue, we can use the remaining session time to talk about what has brought you to counselling.

After your first session - We can arrange a regular time and day for more sessions. Together we explore issues and work towards your goals, which can be different for everyone. During our time together I like to have regular "check ins" now and then. This is just a chat during a session where I ask how you feel you're getting on with counselling. It also gives us an opportunity to look at any progress you feel you've had in sessions and discuss where you'd like your session to go moving forward.

When you decide to end counselling - It's recommended that at least one session's notice is given so that we can arrange a "last session". This helps prepare both of us to say goodbye, reflect on the sessions we've had and give closure to the counselling relationship. Of course, this doesn't mean goodbye forever as my door is always open if you ever feel you need to come back to counselling.
